The Bernstein Project draws to a close: Bernstein Mass Reviews

On Saturday and Sunday we saw the culmination of The Bernstein Project where Bernstein’s Mass was brought to life by a 500-strong cast of singers, dancers, orchestral players. Here are some reviews:

‘And what a piece to introduce schoolkids and teenagers to the awe of a big symphonic piece.  For that, despite all the marching bands, electric guitars and pop songs, is exactly what Mass is, taking us from the simplicity of faith through to a more adult view of human suffering through an endless melody that makes you want to weep uncontrollably. “Smiling through tears”, Shostakovich’s comment on the essence of Jewish folk music, was never more applicable…Lenny would have given each and every one of them, and no doubt the remaining 472 performers, a big kiss for proving that his big statement of cautious optimism still has the power nearly 40 years on from its premiere.’ (TheArtsDesk.com – David Nice)

‘But it is Bernstein’s masterpiece – of that I am in no doubt – and this culminating blast of the South Bank’s year-long Bernstein Project came as close to nailing it as we could reasonably expect…Marin Alsop – who is now all but the official guardian of this piece – kept her far-flung forces on message with barely a stitch dropped. Sorry, but anyone who can still resist the healing benediction of the closing minutes must be made of stone.’ (The Independent – Edward Seckerson – 4 stars)
